My mindset for 2015

I like making new mindsets every start of the year.  Start of the year is my clean slate, fresh start.  These mindsets are in my prayers everyday.  They align my heart and mind to God.  This coming year, these are the mindsets that I will carry.

1.)  Only Jesus will truly satisfy.

2.)  Remove all encumbrances and the sin that so easily entangles.  Run the race. (Hebrews 12:1)

3.)  Be thankful, enjoy what God has given me today.  Live in the present.  (Ecclesiastes 5:12,18-20)

4.)  Trust that God has great plans for me.  (Proverbs 3:5-6)

5.)  Even through the hardship, God is right there beside me.

6.)  Let my light shine before men.

7.)  As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

1.  Only Jesus will truly satisfy.

Our guest pastor in CCF last November 30, 2014 mentioned this -- that life is not about us, it is about God.  If you would look at:

Ezekiel 4:4-7 (NIV)

4 “Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of Israel upon yourself. You are to bear their sin for the number of days you lie on your side. 5 I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the people of Israel.

6 “After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the people of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year. 7 Turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem and with bared arm prophesy against her. 8 I will tie you up with ropes so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have finished the days of your siege.

Truly, this is a meaningless use of someone's time.  For more than a year, prophet Ezekiel was to just lie on his side.  This clearly demonstrates that life is not about what I want to do, what I want to acheive, but it is about God, it is about what He wants me to do.  This is not just a one time incident in the bible.   Prophet Hosea married a prostitute named Gomer as commanded by God.  Not only that, God clearly said that Gomer would be unfaithful to him.  And Hosea obeyed God.

There are commandments by God that do not make sense, and if I am thinking that life is about me, I will be dissappointed.  Life is about God.  Don't get me wrong.  I am not saying God is a sadistic and cruel God and that He doesn't love us.  I truly believe that God loves us, He gave us His only son, Jesus Christ -- His most precious.  What I am saying is, life is not about me, it is about God.

More importantly, nothing in this world will truly satisfy us.  A brand new car will not solve your problems.  The most beautiful wife will not satisfy. A high paycheck will still be short.

Ecclesiastes 5:12

The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.

Only Jesus will truly, truly satisfy.

Matthew 16:25

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

2.  Remove all encumbrances, and the sin that so easily entangles

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,

My life verse verse before has always been Philippians 3:13.  It says, "Forget what lies behind, and strain toward what is ahead" (Bryan's version from memory). But for me, this verse is already a post-sin verse -- a reminder to move forward after you have done wrong.

When one of my brothers in Christ shared a devo, he shared about this verses.  And it reminded me that I have many encumbrances, and I let my favorite sin entangle me a lot of time.  I have to change my mindset from a post-sin to prior to sinning.  From the registry of official life verse in heaven, I am officially changing my life verse to Hebrews 12:1 (I'm kidding, there is no registry of official life verse anywhere).

3.  Be thankful, enjoy what God has given you today.  Live in the present.

Ecclesiastes 5:12,18-20

12 People who work hard sleep well, whether they eat little or much. But the rich seldom get a good night’s sleep.

18 Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. 19 And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. 20 God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.

I always wondered, "Lord, I serve you naman", "All my major life decisions has been always about following you", since I do these things,  I am hoping you will bless me.  Sometimes, my heart grows unthankful because of these expectations that are not met by God.  This verse has reminded me that I should live in the present, and not in the past nor the future.  Enjoy the moment I am currently in, not thinking about what I will do next.  And this is my prayer, that I would have a content heart.  Thanking God, enjoying everything He has given me -- my family, Vannie, work, and ministry.

4.)  Trust that God has great plans for me.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Many times, I have been asking God if I am currently in the right place, or should I be someplace else, doing something else.  But the Lord is leading to stay, and trust that God has plans for me.

5.) Even through the hardship, God is right there beside me.

Before migrating IOM's global website to Drupal, our previous technology stack was always having problems.  It was always going down.  It was one of my most trying time in IOM.  But when we finally switched to Drupal, it was infinitely better!  I hindsight, I realized that even through the hardship, God was with me.  The problem was there, but he is with me all along, going through the problem.

Matthew 28:20

20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

6.  Let my light shine before men.

Matthew 5:14-16

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

I have been a shy person during my stay IOM.  I was not the one greeting other people first.  I was not proactively being warm and welcoming to other people.  I am not let my light shine before men.  This is a reminder for me to go out of my comfort zone, and intentionally spend time with officemates.

7.)  As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Joshua 24:15

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."

There will be decisions in my life that I will be taking that will not be understood by others.  This mindset will remind me, that ultimately, my number one goal is to please Jesus Christ, even if it is the most unpopular decision.
